This is an early paper that introduces SKOS. “SKOS provides a framework for publishing thesauri, classification schemes, and subject indexes on the Web” (p.69). SKOS represents controlled vocabularies on the Web in RDF, a machine-readable format:
- thesauri (ex: AAT),
- classification schemes (ex: Dewey Decimal), and
- subject heading systems (ex: LCSH). Data published using SKOS can be linked, allowing retrieval across multiple systems.
SKOS can be extended by “refinement” which extends properties and classes. A pure SKOS representation can be derived from extensions. SPARQL queries (similar to SQL) can be used to select snippets of data in an enterprise environment. Markup examples of thesauri, classification schemes, and subject headings are provided.
